Buds vs Moab
We decided to ride Porcupine Rim on the first week of February ’07.
Our excitement turned to survival after a series of bad decisions when we found ourselves in the middle of a remote trail with no chance of anyone passing by and only bike clothing to keep us warm. To be off the trail by dark we had to keep moving, hope for ridable terrain, and have no injuries…In spite of the that though, I took the drop off of the “diving board”- a 5 foot drop that not many people take.
Turning back would not have been an option because it would have put us in the shade of the north face part of the trail meaning it would be a lot colder and with deeper snow in the evening. Not to mention the demoralizing aspect of turning back and having to ride 10 miles of dirt road back into town.
We pushed our bikes in snow varying in depths of 6-18 inches of snow for 8 miles. Road for 4 miles in rocky, muddy terrain pretty good riding. Pushed and road through 1-3 inches of snow for the remaining 2 miles. Then we finished of with 5 more miles of road in to town. We were exhausted by the end…As you will notice we are not quite with it at the end of the video.

WRONG! I’ll get a motorcycle when I’m too old to do real riding! Moab on a mtn bike is pure ecstasy!

this is dad, what an incredible trip, I had forgot about this video. I thought our walking the skinny wheel’d bike over gardsman pass was a challenge, I have a hint of what you felt like, my first day on my bike trip, basically all up hill to evanstan, I was dead, in a way I envied the unpredictable adventure you had, in another way…whew!! glad it was you

The lady that shuttled us up there from the Coyote shuttle actually suggested that we do Amasa, but we naievely wanted to a “fun trail” so our trip wouldn’t be wasted.
oh well, like you said we do have bragging rights.

That is some serious snow. We thought pushing 3 miles through 6″ of snow a year ago was stout. I would have ridden The Amasa Back. At least you’ve got bragging rights.

I think I have watched your video about 10 times. My compliments on putting it together – great music too! Good epic to tell your kids.
