You can achieve a great deal of physical fitness by doing the basic activities that the US military uses to test physical fitness:
Running (if you are out of shape — walking; try varying your walk and adding speed walking or sprints in 30 sec -1 min intervals to improve fitness)
Push-ups — Really do build upper body strength
Sit-ups — Try variations such as upper and lower crunches, twists, etc.
Pull-ups (USMC) — Just find a bar such as at a park, etc., and do pull-ups — begin by doing drop downs (start above the bar and slow lower yourself, boost yourself to return to the top and repeat).
You can also add lunges and squats to strengthen your legs and improve running/walking. There are endless varieties of these that can achieve results even without additional weights. (Try Figure 4 Squats, forward and reverse lunges, etc.)
Still not challenging enough? Try combining activities in plyometric bursts. One example I often see Marines practicing is where they are in a prone position holding their bodies up like a push-up but pumping their legs back and forth. You can combine squats with jumps, etc.
Other options include: renting exercise DVDs from the library. Some premium TV packages have Exercise TV with a variety of exercise and workout routines that change frequently.
One of my favorite web resources is livestrong.com (Lance Armstrong is a moving factor behind this website.) Although there is a membership option most of the resources are FREE!
livestrong.com has loads of fitness, nutrition and lifestyle information. Exercise videos — usually just one or two moves, but you can put together a whole library of your favorites for a good workout. The videos also contain very specific information on what the move is and how to maximize the move to gain the most benefit. There is even a free food diary, huge food database and a fitness tracking tool which is FANTASTIC!
So, there is no “easy” way to lose weight, but there are certainly many affordable free and low-cost exercise resources.
