The solution to a huge amount of our energy needs? Along our?

ifoyo asked:

rivers. Pontoons with paddle wheels built in to turn generators to produce electricity 24/7. They could be enlarged with exercise equipment in them, eg bicycles, connected to the turning shafts. Useful exercise. Pontoons could be chained to the river banks to ride up and down with the water levels.
I have seen small scale of same on ranches in the west. Nonpolluting, cheap, connected to the grid. Easily maintained.

It is a wonderful idea and wish we could and want too. I live along a river but can’t due to county ordinances. If you are in a location where no people are around I say go for it! I am working on a wind gen for my home since my “wonderful” neighbors are really close.

Wind, solar and small hydroelectric are all good choices and are the only way to move forward from our dependence on oil.

The system is set up to keep the power in the hands of the power companies.

This is inefficient because of energy losses incurred in long range transmission.

America was built with mills on streams for power. Many of those mills were abandoned and small hydro electric plants took their place. Many of those were bought by the large electric companies and abandoned. Now the government red tape would stop any attempt at using water power.
