What brand has the best downhill mountain bikes?

colorado bike trails
mike asked:

I’ve done some downhill mountain biking on some trails in Colorado and absolutely love it. I live in Indiana though. I want to get into the sport more and was wondering what would be a good bike to buy. Or what a good brand would be to check out, what brands to stay away from?

First you have to decide what you want the bike to do? Do you want a long travel bike that pedals or do you want an all out race bike? Most race bikes don’t pedal well and are pretty limited for riding. How much travel do you want and what price range?

1. Intense – I ride a 2007 M3
Great race bike, not a trail bike.
2. Kona stinky, Great long travel bike that pedals well.
3. Foes Mono(race) Fly(long travel trail)
4. Iron Horse bikes Sunday(race) 7point7 or 5point5

Avoid KHS Bikes, Seen too many *****.
And yes I broke one :)

If you have the money, the bikes I’ve read consistently good reviews on are:
Yeti 303, Santa Cruz V-10, Commencal Supreme DH Team.

If you’re into gearboxes on bikes, try a Lahar or a Nicolai.

If you’re on a budget, then try:
Giant Glory, Scott High Octane, Mongoose EC-D, GT DH-l, Morewood Izimu.

Do enough research an you’ll know what to stay away from.

Good luck – great sport to get into provided you can heal quickly.

P.S. make sure you wear body armour and a full-face helmet.
