We decided to ride Porcupine Rim on the first week of February ’07.
Our excitement turned to survival after a series of bad decisions when we found ourselves in the middle of a remote trail with no chance of anyone passing by and only bike clothing to keep us warm. To be off the trail by dark we had to keep moving, hope for ridable terrain, and have no injuries…In spite of the that though, I took the drop off of the “diving board”- a 5 foot drop that not many people take.

Turning back would not have been an option because it would have put us in the shade of the north face part of the trail meaning it would be a lot colder and with deeper snow in the evening. Not to mention the demoralizing aspect of turning back and having to ride 10 miles of dirt road back into town.

We pushed our bikes in snow varying in depths of 6-18 inches of snow for 8 miles. Road for 4 miles in rocky, muddy terrain pretty good riding. Pushed and road through 1-3 inches of snow for the remaining 2 miles. Then we finished of with 5 more miles of road in to town. We were exhausted by the end…As you will notice we are not quite with it at the end of the video.

DMACC security found a bicycle and a pile of clothing 30 feet from the northeast corner of Lake Future around 10:30 a.m. today.
Sgt. Randall Langford, the officer on duty at the time, noticed the property while making his routine rounds. He said the items looked to be “abandoned.”

“Because of the way it appeared, I brought the police in and turned it over to them,” said Langford.
Ankeny police collected the items at 11:10 a.m.
“[There is] no suspicious activity at this time,” said Ankeny police officer Willy Figueroa. “We just found some property, some clothing. Someone probably lost it.”
Police searched the immediate vicinity. “We checked the pond area. Everything is OK,” said Figueroa.
Ankeny police requested that DMACC staff continue searching the lake area. Four to six workers from the grounds department were expected to be on site.
