Buying Your Bicycle

Posted by Art on Jul 3, 2009 in Biking

There is no greater joy than road cycling. With the wind in your hair and the whir of wheels beneath you, you are free on the open road to explore what you like. In order to get started in road cycling you need to firstly get your hands on a good road bike. Choosing a road bike can be a difficult task for a first timer, but with a little bit of effort and research you can come up with a good deal. Make sure you get a frame that is the right size for you. Getting a professional at a bike shop to measure you is a really good idea.

All bicycle stores and shops carry parts and accessories for your bike – be it a performance bike, trek bike, or just for riding around the neighborhood with the kids.

Most bicycle shops also carry a large selection in many price ranges. Everyone is catered for in a good bicycle store; from the top-end road cycling enthusiasts – right down to kids with their first bikes. There are several types of bikes to from which to choose. One is the mountain or all-terrain bike. These bikes are designed for casual cycling and have the wider or ‘fat’ tires. You can ride these bikes on hard, dirt-packed roads or off-road. Other types of bikes are racers and touring bikes, which have narrower or ‘skinny’ tires. Touring bikes are fitted out for long distance touring. Hybrid bikes are a cross between a road bike and mountain bike. They have upright handlebars and a tire somewhere between wide and narrow. Most bikes sold today for adults are multi-speed bikes with up to 24-speeds.

Picking the right Accessories

Bicycles have many accessories. The most important accessory you need to buy is a bike helmet. Bike helmets are compulsory for all cyclists. Wearing a helmet reduces the chance of serious head injury in an accident.

Another accessory you might want to consider purchasing is a pair of padded cycling shorts. These shorts come in many different styles and have extra padding in the seat to make riding more comfortable. Cycling gloves are a good investment for long rides.

A seat bag is handy for storing items such as a tire repair kit and extra tube. A pump attached to the frame, for pumping up your tires is also a good idea, or you might consider a water bottle that attaches to the bike frame.

Your High Street Bike Shop – Where Has It Gone

Posted by Art on May 28, 2009 in Biking

Going back 15 years you would have found 2-3 bike shops within a 5 mile radius. Nowadays however a great many have shut their doors and ceased trading, leaving only the bigger companies and shops that sell a range of products such as snowboards and climbing gear as well as bikes. So what is it that has been the downfall of the small biking shop, and will the trend continue? Lets take a look at a few factors.

More Cars. Compared to a century ago, the number of cars around has obviously increased dramatically. More people are not only buying cars but also using their cars a lot more. However, does this necessarily mean that bikes are being used less as a result. Halfords, a large chain of shops in the UK that serves both car and bike owners have stated that over the past 10 years there has been a decrease of 10% in the number of commuter, second hand bikes and new mountain bikes sold. This year just gone however has actually seen the first rise in bike purchases, which maybe a result of financial strain on car owners right now.

Internet Shopping. Every day sees an a rise in the amount of purchases happening over the Internet. Even though bikes are classic items that people like to try out first, the amount that are being sold online continues to increase every year. According to the top bike retailer in the UK, sales on the internet account for 10% more of the total sales each year since 2000.

Online Trading sites. The last factor to consider is the increase in online classified sites such as Ebay. Once upon a time people would take their unwanted bikes to the local bike shop and either sell it or trade it in for a new one. Now you get on your computer and advertise your bike in minutes to thousands of people all over the country. There are now even sites set up specifically for trading used surfboard, snowboards and mountain bikes etc, such as Extreme Sports Trader and Bike Magic

Bicycle Buying Tips

Posted by Art on May 12, 2009 in Biking

While buying a bike is not on the equivalent level of commitment as, say, getting married, it is still a decision that warrants some thought. especially if you are considering buying a bike for the first time, it can seem as if your options are practically endless.

Your first decision comes in determining what type of bike you are after. Are you going around town, or are you trail riding? Do you want to ride fast, or do you want smoothness and comfort? There are essentially four main styles of bikes to choose from, and your selection should really depend on what you expect your main type of riding to be.

Ask yourself what kind of riding will you be doing? There are different types of bicycles that are designed for the kinds of riding people do.For long-distance rides, road and tour bikes are built for comfort.  Racing bicycles are lightweight and designedfor speed more than comfort. Mountain or trail bikes have sturdy frames and wide tires for all-terrain biking. In addition there are intermediate designs, such as hybrid bicycles thatunite features of road and mountain bicycles. Which one you choose depends on your individual interests.

Usually bicycle riding is either mountain biking or road biking, mountain biking being the most challenging. Mountain biking is done on terrain and mountain trails where there are no trails. For general fitness purposes I ride only on roads and smooth, maintained trails. The fact is, to benefit from biking, you do not need mountains, you can do it anyplace. Even if you live in the flatlands and travel long distances to ski country you can keep in top ski condition by adding road biking to your exercise routine.

There is practically no limit to how much money you can spend on a new bike. To keep your spending under control, figure out what price range you are willing to pay for your new bike and try to just look at bikes within that price range. A recommendation when buying a bike is not to buy it from a mass-merchant store such as Wal-Mart or Costco. People tend to get disappointed. Support your local bike shop and get a better product and much better service. Another choose could be to search on-line. Schwinn bicycles have been around for many years and are a well-known, reputable company. A Schwinn Cruiser bicycles for example, in my opinion, are still one of the more comfortable bikes to cruise around on, especially the beach. Try sitting on a Schwinn Sierra bike, it is one of the most comfortable bicycles I have experienced. But,  in the end, the choose is yours. You decide what is best for you

Bicycles have been a popular means of recreation and transportation for over a century. Today, with gasoline price increases and rising concern about the environmental impact if burning fossil fuels, more and more people are turning to bicycles as an substitute to driving. If you’ve decided to join the ranks of those who are pedaling their way to physical fitness, it helps to know how to buy the right bicycle for you.

Like numerous adults in America, you probably learned how to ride a bike as a child. It’s a common childhood activity in the majority of suburban neighborhoods. Kids still get together and ride around on their bikes. Even in todays world, kids still bicycle to their local store, to the part, to school and to their friend’s houses. When the bicycle is your only way to get somewhere, you tend to ride it a lot.

Posted by Jeff on Feb 1, 2009 in Bike Equipment
Eskimo asked:

What are some good exercises to build muscle without using weights or equipment? I don’t need to look like a bodybuilder, i just want to be muscular.

I have found that the best exercises for my abs is the bicycle, and i also use the “ab wheel” – that little wheel with two handles on it. Now i just need exercises for the rest of my body.

DMACC security found a bicycle and a pile of clothing 30 feet from the northeast corner of Lake Future around 10:30 a.m. today.
Sgt. Randall Langford, the officer on duty at the time, noticed the property while making his routine rounds. He said the items looked to be “abandoned.”

“Because of the way it appeared, I brought the police in and turned it over to them,” said Langford.
Ankeny police collected the items at 11:10 a.m.
“[There is] no suspicious activity at this time,” said Ankeny police officer Willy Figueroa. “We just found some property, some clothing. Someone probably lost it.”
Police searched the immediate vicinity. “We checked the pond area. Everything is OK,” said Figueroa.
Ankeny police requested that DMACC staff continue searching the lake area. Four to six workers from the grounds department were expected to be on site.
