So many bicycles get stolen here in the UK every single year in fact according to a recent poll a bicycle is stolen every 71 seconds which means that 440,000 are roughly stolen each year. But why on earth do people do this, are they really that interested in getting an old Pinarello or do they simply do it because they can?
The Americans seem to think that a lot of their bike thefts are conducted by bike couriers, is this really even possible. It seems very strange that the people who use the bicycles all of the time are the ones stealing the bikes. Well the truth is that these types of people are not after then entire bike but the bike accessories that are attached to it.
Because these people are using their bikes all of the time it would seem that they are always looking for newer and better parts hence their reason to steal. As a whole I am certainly not going to be pushing the blame on the couriers here at all.
The thing is, it doesnt matter how old the bike is I am sure there is a part on it that is worth a small amount of cash, hence the reason people do it. Many drug abusers and people who are desperate steal the bikes to get a bit of extra money. Alcoholics also commit crimes like this as they do have enough to fuel their very expensive addictions.
Most of the people doing it here in the UK are idiots and will not take it for money but just for a laugh and will often dump it after a while. Here in the UK I can almost say for sure that the majority of bike thefts are down to CHAVS that have nothing better to do with their lives.
I think that it is obvious but the only piece of advice out there is that you should have the bike locked up whenever you are not around it, this includes outside your own home. Other than that put on your specialized road shoes and get going!

Many people have started to appreciate the benefits of using a recumbent bicycle. These are cycles which are designed so the rider is sat in a supine or prone position. There are many different kinds of recumbent bikes out there so you should be able to find one which is able to meet your wishes. The three main types of recumbent bicycles are long wheelbase, short wheelbase, and compact long wheelbase. Each type of recumbent bicycle will have a different position for the pedals and wheels re the seat.
Long wheelbase recumbent bicycles will have the pedals in between the seat and the front wheel. Short wheelbase recumbent cycles will have the pedals in front of the front wheel. Compact long wheelbase recumbent bicycles will include pedals either extremely near the front wheel or above it. Whichever type of recumbent cycle you select you’ll find that it has various benefits not found with traditional upright cycles.
Many of us find upright bicycles uncomfortable and tricky to sit on for any period of time. With recumbent bicycles your body is in a more natural position and there is less stress put on your numerous bones and joints. This makes the bike much more content to ride, particularly for longer rides. The more comfy you’re the longer you are probably going to ride, that means more exercise and improved health. Using a recumbent bike is also more fit for your heart. Since your legs are closer to being the same level as your heart there’s less hydrostatic pressure which measures it is simple for the blood to circulate thru your body.
Another reason people like recumbent bikes is that they provide bigger stability than upright cycles. Since the body is nearer to the ground level there is a reduced risk of the rider getting wounded in a fall.

Bikes are made up of hundreds of components, everyone being important in its own right. You wouldn’t be able to ride without pedals, handlebars, a stem or most other bike accessories for that matter. One element that is integral to the movement of the bike and the transition of power from the rider to the wheels is the chain. The amazing piece of metal design work is now used in countries all over the globe and has myriad applications in each. However, chains do break down and malfunction if not looked after properly. Here are the 3 main reasons why you need to give your chain some regular TLC.
Life extension. Because chains are made from metal they are subject to rusting and corrosion. This is especially the case on bikes because they are frequently getting wet and dirty. After every time a bike is ridden the chain should be washed down well and then oil or a suitable lubricate should be applied to it. This will prevent any corrosion taking place and should also prevent the chain from ceasing up. I you get to point that more than a few links are not moving properly, you will be seriously detrimental to the chains potential.
Damage to bike. If you do not look after the chain on your bike it will start to damage other component that are connected to it. Cranksets work in close connection with the chain and if the links are not moving freely or are damaged, this will cause the crankset to be bent out of shape. Another part that can easily suffer harm is the derailleur, which is also in constant contact with the chain. Racing bikes are even more prone to this their mechanisms are very finely tuned.
Harm to you. A chain that is not in a good way will also pose a risk to whomever is riding the bike. If enough links cease up then the chain can jam and sometimes bring the wheels to an abrupt stop. If you are riding at any sort of speed this can cause the rider to be thrown from the bike and receive untold injuries, especially if you are wearing fragile cycle clothing

ifoyo asked: rivers. Pontoons with paddle wheels built in to turn generators to produce electricity 24/7. They could be enlarged with exercise equipment in them, eg bicycles, connected to the turning shafts. Useful exercise. Pontoons could be chained to the river banks to ride up and down with the water levels.
I have seen small scale of same on ranches in the west. Nonpolluting, cheap, connected to the grid. Easily maintained.
