Cycling – The Professional Cyclists Riding Uniform – Engine Of The Rider

Posted by Art on Jun 5, 2011 in Biking

Like many sports, professional bicyclists wear a self-fashioned uniform consisting of a cycling jersey, cycling shorts, cycling shoes, gloves and a helmet. When you hear the word cycling, most people conjure up an image of Lance Armstrong and the Tour de France. He wears the traditional cycling uniform.

In fact, manufacturers of cycles that fold up, typically design them specifically for getting you from your house to another mode of transportation. So whether you need to get to a bus stop, subway station or train station, this type of two-wheeler is perfect for your needs. While these bikes aren’t designed to give you a shot at winning the Tour de France, they’ll the perfect type of urban transport when you need to travel short distances quickly.

Besides their convenient function, another reason why these cycles are so popular is based on their form. These bicycles have 20-inch wheels like the BMX bicycles that many of us rode when we were youngsters. They also typically contain two main hinges: one on the handlebars and one at the middle of the cross member. Collapsing the cycle is a piece of cake. Afterwards, you can easily tote the bicycle around wherever you need to go, such as on a subway train or bus. This contraption makes it easier to take your cycle virtually anywhere.

Furthermore, a folding bike is typically available in one size. So there’s no need to spend time and effort determining which size cycle is the right one for you. Making simple adjustments (such as the height of the seat post) can easily transform the two-wheeler into the perfect size for your particular needs.

Originally, cycling shoes were actually affixed to the bicycle pedal. However, today, many cycling shoes attach to the pedal with a cleat on the shoe. The clipless pedal shoe is a stiff-soled shoe that actually clips to the bike pedal. It offers the most energy efficiency. There are two different versions; one for mountain bikes and one for road bikes. The other option is a toe clip. This is actually not a shoe, but a clip that can be attached to any shoe. The toe clip is a more economical method than purchasing clipless pedal shoes.

Finally, tires tend to last for roughly 1,000-2,000 miles. This is based on various factors, such as your riding method, your weight, and the location of the tire (front or back). Tires are crucial for cycling, so you may need to upgrade them if their design or sizing is wrong for the primary type of riding that you do.

When shopping for bicycles, you should definitely consider trek bikes. For over 30 years, they’ve been producing some of the top cycles in the industry. You can find the perfect bike for whichever type of cycling you do. Who knows? Perhaps you could be the next Lance Armstrong!

Not Only About Cycling – Tour De France

Posted by Art on Sep 10, 2010 in Biking

The Tour de France is the world’s grandest bicycle race in the world, spanning more than 2,200 miles of French countryside.  Professional cyclists around the world consider travel to France to take part in the race as their biggest stage in their cycling careers.  It is the one cycling event where media outlets deliver the event to millions of watching cycling fans.

The science behind a comfortable bike saddle.

A rigorous study of the benefits of the SMP4Bike saddle for long distance cyclists resulted in an article, authored by Breda, G. Piazza, N. Bernardi, V. Lunardon, E. Caruso, A. being published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine 2005, Vol 2; Number 5 pages 605 – 611

Development of a New Geometric Bicycle Saddle for the Maintenance of Genital-Perineal Vascular Perfusion The Authors – from the Department of Urology San Bassiano Hospital, Bassano del Grappa Department of Urology SS. Giovanni e Paolo Hospital, Venice; Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, San Bassiano Hospital, Bassano del Grappa – set out to identify a bicycle saddle model suitable for cyclists that cover long distances that is capable of limiting compression of the structures of the pelvic floor and, thus, protecting the blood perfusion of the penis and preventing possible consequences in erection.

In bikers that cover long distances, we observed an increase of erectile dysfunctions of the penis write the authors.

There are two theories from an etiopathogenic point of view. Certain authors attribute a fundamental role to the compression of the pudendal nerve. According to others, an important role is carried out by the hypoperfusion of penile blood, which may cause a fibrosis of the corpus cavernosum. All these theories converge, nevertheless, in identifying the perineal region as a critical point in which a compression of these structures takes place. Research was therefore oriented towards the realization of a bicycle saddle model that would be able to prevent an excessive perineal compression.

Tour packages for the Tour de France are very popular during the French summer.  These tours usually have arrangements for group accommodations partnered with the top chain hotels in the country.  Extensive packages also offer booking from independent and family-run hotels.

Road Bike Frames

Posted by Art on Aug 19, 2010 in Biking

The frame is the essence of a road bike and also its strongest point. If you are in the market for a new road bike than the road bike frame should be the part that gets most of your attention.

The factors to consider when buying a bike frame are the material its made from, the symmetry and sizes of the bike frame.

Early wood and steel road bike frames

While road bike frames designs have not changed much over the years, the same can not be said of the materials, and its the material of the bike frame that separates the big boys from the rest.

Wood and than steel were the first materials used in the manufacturing of road bike frames. You can still find bike frames made from steel, and you will notice how much heavier they are then current bikes.

Over the years bike frame designs have also evolved. Changes in road conditions and technology have lead to an evolution in road bike designs. When roads were rougher than they are today, bike frames designs had laid back angles and a longer wheel base.

Bike frames made from alloy

The introduction of alloy tubes marked a turning point in the manufacture of bike frames. This made frames a lot lighter than the previous steel frames.

Bikes under $2000 are among the best selling.  These bikes usually combine an alloy frame, a  carbon fork, chain and seat. Bikes solf at this price point are usually a good value for the money.

Bike frames made from titanium

The next step up in bike frames is the titanium frame. Titanium bike frames are almost weightless and offer a great ride.

Titanium and carbon road bike frames are a much more expensive option.

These top of the line bikes mix a titanium frame with carbon seat and fork. This combination makes for maximum comfort and handling while preserving safety.

bike frame sizes

Once you settle on the material and manufacturer of your bike frame. The size of the frame is the next thing to consider in your buying decision. The right size will insure a comfortable and safe ride. When determining the right size bike frame there are a few thing to look at.

The size of the frame is the length of the seat tube.  The number is usually presented in centimeters. A popular way to determine your bike frame size is to measure 0.65 of your inseam length. You can calculate your bike frame size by measuring your inseam, converting it to centimeters and multipling by 0.65.  For your reference, one inch is equal to 2.54 centimeters. With this method an inseam length of 34 would translates into a 56  bike frame size. If you are buying a mountain bikes you should get a frame size that is 10 to 12 centimeters smaller.

When an exact size is not possible this can be corrected by adjusting the seat height. Another distance to consider is that of the part of the frame that holds the pedals and cranks to the seat.  This measurement should be about 0.88 of your inseam size.

A minor adjustment of the seat hight and the right bike frame size will result in the perfect fit.

After buying your bike go out and enjoy it!

One thing that is usually the first on the list is the cost of the bike. Of course you are going to need to think about how much you will ride your bike as well as where you are going to be riding it, but cost is one of the most important things.

Good bicycles can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. It’s not going to matter if you don’t have thousands of dollars to put on a bike, because there is a way you can find a great bike for a runaway price. Used bicycles and bicycles being sold at auction are great ways to save money while still getting the cycling bicycle that you need and want. The type of handlebars you choose is also important. There are many different types to choose from, each better for specific roles. Handlebars that extend straight out give you more control over how your bike is maneuvered over rough terrain. These kinds of handlebars are also great in distributing your weight evenly. For racing however you will want special handlebars, ones which are thinner and are positioned in such a way you can lean over them as you cycle. This is to lower wind resistance and will allow you to go faster. For those of us who only plan to use our bikes sporadically, you may wish to go with a handlebar style that is comfortable and yet easily stored away.  Portable exercise bikes are also helpful for training.

You will need to consider each of these things when choosing your bicycle..

Many differing options are available to you as you look to purchase a bicycle. Choosing their next bicycle is difficult, even for professional riders. Considering the various factors makes purchasing a bike tough. Planning ahead for things like bike use, safety and comfort, as well as where it will be ridden, and what it looks like, will help you make a better decision. Choosing between all of the options available can be overwhelming, especially since new developments in cycling happen all the time. Here are some of the criteria you should use when you are buying your next cycling bicycle.

One thing that is usually the first on the list is the cost of the bike. You will also be thinking about where you plan on riding your bike, as well as how often you are going to ride, but before you think about any of that you are going to have to think about the cost.

The price ranges of good bikes go anywhere from the hundreds to the thousands. That doesn’t mean all bicycles are going to cost that much, so don’t worry; there is no reason why you can’t find a great bicycle that is in your price range. The local auctions are some of the best ways to find wonderful deals on things like bicycles and equipment so you won’t find yourself spending too much money. These handlebars will also distribute your weight over a big area. For racing bikes you will want completely different handlebars, these handlebars will curve and allow you to ride your bike in a leaning position, this is to cut down on wind resistance and allow you to cycle faster. For people who rarely use their bike they will want handlebars which allow the bike to be stored away efficiently, but which also offer some level of comfort when cycling.

Children’s bikes have altogether different things to consider. The Bike Rack Is A Cyclist’s Best Friend

Posted by Art on Jul 15, 2010 in Biking

So you love to bicycle. You have to go on a road trip. Do you leave your bike behind or do you take it with you?

The answer is obvious – take it with you!

We all know how much fun it is bike riding. It’s good exercise, you get places a lot faster than if you were jogging, and you can see all the beautiful scenery across this great country.

So what’s stopping you from bringing your bike with you?

Space considerations? If you’ve got all your luggage in your trunk there’s no room for your bike.

The hassle? And even if you do have enough room in the car, you’ll probably have to take the wheel off to fit it in, and the bike or car might end up getting scratched.

There is a simple solution for this – a car bike rack. There’s two main kinds – one that fits on the roof of the car and one that is rear mounted. You’ll have to decide which type would best suit your needs.

Put off by the cost of buying a bike rack? Think about this for a second. Keeping yourself healthy on the road is always an important need – health costs from lack of exercise can be huge! You’ll probably be able to rent a bike at your destination but there’s the cost of the rental – and frankly the bike itself will not be of the highest quality.

Then there’s always serendipity to take into account. You could be visiting a place that you’ve never been to before, so you don’t think ahead of time to bring your bike. When you get there you discover that there is some fantastic scenery around that you can see – in a park, along a trail, etc! – and you don’t have your bike with you. So make a habit of taking your bike with you everywhere, and because you have a bike carrier, it couldn’t be easier.

Family Fun With a Bicycle

If you have young children, the time to get them interested in biking is now.

It’s an unfortunate fact that children these days don’t get enough exercise. The lure of playing video games or sitting around and watching television is too great for most of them. (But if they’re reading a book – don’t bother them! Let them read). And even if kids do go outside, often they are simply “hanging out” with their friends and not getting any exercise at all.

A great many children also don’t get to spend enough time with their parents. “They grow up so fast,” is a common phrase that parents use about the time lost with their kids. But there is a simple way to both improve your relationship with your kids, and give them a love of exercise at the same time. Go biking together – not only will you be spending time together and getting exercise, but you’ll also be sharing experiences that will stay with all of you for the rest of your life. Whether the’re riding a Strider Running Bike or a Diamondback Mini Della, there is always time to get your kids into cycling. (Unfortunately they will have to leave their Radio Flyer 79 Big Flyer at home.)

And that brings us back to the bike carrier. Each parent will need a bike, and each kid will need their own bike, and they all need to be taken with you on your trips. So pick up that bike carrier, and get out and start having fun.

Bicycle Riding: How To Minimize The Risk Of Getting Injured

Posted by Art on Jul 7, 2010 in Biking

Cyclists, no matter how careful they get, still is susceptible to getting injured while riding. Accidents may happen, especially when driving on a busy road or perilous terrain. It’s vital that one’s safety is maintained at all costs. And this is when having the right protective gears and knowing road rules step into the picture.

Although protective wear will not prevent injuries from happening, they can lessen their severity. Wearing appropriate garments for bike riding, such as Pearl Izumi shorts and a matching top isn’t enough. These garments give you a certain level of protection all right, but there are other must-haves to be worn with them.

Wearing a helmet keeps your head from sustaining critical injuries. Studies have concluded that head injuries are reduced by 60 percent when a helmet is worn during a bicycling crash. However, it’s not enough that you put on any helmet type. Go for one that’s specifically designed for cycling. Look for that sticker or label saying it meets strict standards.

There are other essential gears such as shatter proof goggles and gloves. If you’re a beginner or if you’re going in the direction of extreme sports, you should have additional ones. Some of them include shin guards, elbow pads, knee pads, and the likes. Shoes specifically for cycling are also available, for comfort and extra safety.

Your bicycle should also have accessories that are meant to keep you out of harm’s way. Your Schwinn mountain bike or BMX may not come fully accessorized. If you intend to ride at night at times, it’s important for your bicycle to have front and rear lights. Installing reflectors will also make you more visible to motorists. Then there are also mirrors and horns available.

Aside from wearing protective gears, knowing certain road rules will add to your safety when taking your bicycle out. See to it that you ride in a straight line and always use hand signals when turning or stopping. Behave like you’re also riding a car and drive defensively. Sometimes, common sense is important, such as avoiding busy roads for your own good.

Having a personal trainer is essential if you’re planning on becoming a professional cyclist. He or she will coach you the right way, each time your skill level advances. However, it’s not constantly that there’s someone to guide you while riding. Putting on proper protective gears and abiding by road rules will help minimize your risk of getting in an accident or injured.
