How To Choose A Bike Correctly

Posted by Art on Jan 2, 2012 in Biking

There are a lot of different criteria to consider when you are buying a cycling bicycle. Choosing their next bicycle is difficult, even for professional riders. The fact of the matter is that getting a bike involves many different choices. Imagine the future: how safe, comfy and stylish do you need the bike to be. How far will you ride and where will you be riding? Trying to keep yourself informed of all the new choices, as well those just about to be released, can make it really hard to finally choose the bike for you. Take the easy road, and use the tests we suggest to choose your new ride.bike

One way to choose the bike that fits you is to sit on the bike and see if your feet will rest flat on the floor, in case you need to stop yourself. Some experts, however, say that this is not a good idea. These experts say in order to have the best cycling experience you can, you should allow for a few inches between the ground and your feet. When buying a new bike, you will see the seat is placed extremely low to the crossbar, so when you sit on the bike with your feet on the ground and are able to bend your knees, you should pick a different bike. Your knees will cause interference as you are pedaling, because they will come up higher than they should, which is a result of your knees being bent when you are at rest with your feet down. Your bicycle seat should not be at the lowest setting, which is sitting atop the crossbar. You always want to change the position of the seat so that it is a few inches higher than normal, so keep this in mind when picking your bike. You want to have the comfort of the seat being higher up than the crossbar on the bike, because if the seat is sitting on the crossbar, you will not be comfortable. You want to be able to sit on the bike and place your foot on the pedal at the lowest position, and almost be able to fully extend your leg.

You should already have your safety gear bought and ready to go. The new bicycle helmets look and feel nothing like the old bicycle helmets. Not only do they look a lot better than they used to, they are also built better to provide greater protection. You should never go for a ride without putting on your helmet first. You never know when that little detail is going to save you from an early grave.

It wouldn’t hurt to invest in some knee pads and elbow pads, as well as wrist and ankle guards if you plan to do some off-roading. Another piece of safety equipment that you should think about getting are pants clips, especially if you are going to be using your bike as a primary mode of transportation. These are clips that keep your pants legs up and out of the way of your gears and chain. When you are searching for the appropriate cycling bicycle to suit you, there are a number of factors to consider. Are you going to be riding your bicycle every day or riding it only when you feel the urge to? Which height of bike is the most comfortable fit for you? Do you feel more at ease with your feet just above the ground as you sit on the seat, or would you rather that your feet sit flat when you are at rest? Think about all this when buying your bike, and you will make the right choice.

Never Ride Beyond Your Control

Posted by Art on Mar 16, 2011 in Biking

There are numerous ways that you can improve your

mountain bike safety.  Many riders will tell you

that wearing a helmet is the most important step to

staying safe.  The second most important step is

that you should always ride in control of your

mountain bike.

By riding in control you’ll not only prevent crashes,

but keep others on the trail safe as well.  When

riding out of control you loose the ability to

adjust to the terrain as you ride over it.  This can

and usually does result in serious injury to yourself

and others.

Follow these helpful guidelines and you’ll remain

safe when riding your mountain bike.

Gear

Always make sure that you wear a helmet and other

necessary safety gear for the conditions that you

plan to ride in.

Never ride beyond your control

There is never any shame in walking the areas of

the trail that you don’t feel comfortable in riding

and you should never let anyone else tell you that

there is.

Keep your speed under control

Always make sure you keep your speed at a level

where you can quickly adjust to any obstacles or

change in the trail.

Knowing your trail

You should never push the limits on trails that you

aren’t familiar with.  You should take trails you

aren’t familiar with at slow speeds until you learn

them better

Slow down around blind corners

If you can’t see past a corner you should always

slow down, as you never know who or what is around it.

Start small then go big

Work your way up to stunts or obstacles.  Practice in

less difficult or dangerous situations before you

move up to something more dangerous.

Playing it smart

If you start to question what your doing, you probably

shouldn’t be doing.  Always think about what you are

doing and go with your instincts.

Outfitting a Bicycle for Commuting

Posted by Art on Dec 21, 2009 in Biking

Introduction to cycling

While taken seriously as a form of transportation in many countries, the bicycle is regarded as either a toy or a sporting device in the United States of America. It’s okay for most kids to ride a bicycle, and it is acceptable to use a bike for racing and sometimes fitness. The potential of a bike goes far beyond that because it can also be used as an earth friendly way to go back and forth to work. You can also add a thule bike rack to make it even easier to get your bike delivered to a location where you can ride.

Types Of Bikes To Buy For Communting

You have to be careful when selecting a bicycle for practical use. A lot of the common models have wide wires and rugged frames and are really designed more for a trail in the woods rather than for ridding on the road or sidewalk. So make sure you look for a bike with skinny tires and a longer wheelbase so that it will be easier to pedal on the street. Some bikes are called touring bikes and these may be the best for using as a vehicle for work.

Use A Bike With Public Transportation

Suppose you live a little far from the office and you just don’t have the time or the physical capability to pedal that far. You should consider riding the local bus for part of the way. Most city bus lines now have bike racks on them where you can load your bike, and ride for a good part of the way. If the bus travels within a couple miles of your home and a couple miles near your office, you can really make your commute a lot easier.

Accessories For Your Bike

A few accessories will probably help make your bicycle commuting go well. One is additional storage. How are you going to bring your stuff on the bike? There’s a wide variety of options, but the two most common is a backpack that goes on the rider or baskets and bags that mount on the bike itself. Other items you may need include a rear view mirror so you can keep an eye on traffic, a headlight for when the time change makes you ride in the dark, and a turn signal to communicate with motorists, and a bike lock that will secure your bike while not in use.

Your bike is not a automobile, so the terrain is going to be very important for your ride. You will want to avoid heavy car traffic, and hills as much as possible. This means you may take one direction to work and another on your way back home.
